Easy Peasy Applesauce

Parenthood has made applesauce a staple in my kitchen. And I’ve bought my share of individual serving sized cups of applesauce for packed lunches. Then, I started making applesauce with the organic apples from our produce delivery, and guess what?  The littlest chef now prefers a rustic (peel & all) homemade applesauce with a boatload of cinnamon in it to any anemic store bought variety.  It really couldn’t be easier.  We quarter the apples and take out the core with a paring knife, throw them peel and all into the slow cooker.  Add any other fruits that need to get eaten (pears, blueberries, cranberries, etc.) and about 2 Tbs. of ground cinnamon.  The slow cooker works its magic on low for about 6 hours, and then I use the immersion blender (AKA boat motor) to puree the whole mixture.  It makes the house smell like apple pie, albeit in a much healthier form!

Archive Redesign

I’ve recently redesigned the weekly game plan and game plan archive sections of this blog to use a more user-friendly calendar format.  The weekly game plan link under “What’s Cooking” on the blog’s sidebar now takes you to a calendar view of the week that displays dinner plans and a head start task list.  Then, the monthly game plans link takes you to a month view of the meal plans, from which you can navigate backward to view archives dating back to the start of the blog.  And under “Coming Soon…” on the blog’s sidebar, you can see what’s for dinner over the next couple days.

I think this format will make my archives a lot more useful to me in future planning.  I’d love to hear what you think about it!

Much Ado about Family Dinners

The game plan for next week starts out easy, as we’ll be travelling for the first two days.  Then, after holidays and snow days and what amounts to several weeks in a row of being out of our normal routine, we’ll be back in that routine in a flash!

I continue to see a a lot of debate over the importance of family dinners and the challenge of making it happen (see, for example, this Huffington Post piece about the benefits of reserving time for family dinners).  On the subject of whether to have a family dinner at home, I’m a staunch advocate.  On the subject of how to make it happen, I have mixed feelings.  When I’m enjoying cooking and the kitchen
